This past weekend Kathleen and I were out doing some sight-seeing along the Mississippi River south of Menomonie. On our way home, we drove north out of Pepin through the area where Laura Ingalls Wilder, of Little House on the Prairie fame, was born. We spotted a rather imposing church off in the distance, and went to take some pictures of it. While I was shooting the church, Kathleen was walking around the tree-lined yard along the church drive. She discovered that there were thousands of Monarch butterflies gathered in the trees. After exhausting the 1/2 roll of film I had left, we decided to return on Sunday morning. As you can see from the pictures below, it was well worth the return trip. It was a beautiful sunny morning, with the fog just clearing. The butterflies were still there in abundance, we assume preparing for their fall migration.
